With the innovative inventions that are coming out from the Apple company, it's no wonder that they are very keen on protecting their intellectual property through patents.

From the iPhone to the iPad, Apple's touch screen technology has allowed consumers to interact with their devices with much greater ease and speed. As a natural extension of that technology, it seems that Apple will now be placing touch screens into their new Mac computers. According to Apple's recently filed international patent in Europe, the new Mac will enable the user to move between a traditional keyboard to input via a touch screen. The patent is entitled "Transitioning Between Modes of Input", but Apple has not given any public comments as to the patent and its implications for the product development of its upcoming touch screen Mac.

Apple’s Latest iPhone Patent to Fight Thieves

Apple has recently unveiled a patent which shows their intention to help protect users of a lost or stolen Apple iPhone from having their private information being exploited. Apple's patent recognizes that with the growing popularity and increased usage of the iPhone, more and more users do in fact store their sensitive details such as their home addresses, contact information, credit card details and social security numbers.

Although this patent has been touted as a new clever anti-theft system, critics have argued that such a system could actually prevent iPhone owners of jailbreaking their own phones. American and European courts have already confirmed that iPhone users do have the right to jailbreak their own device in accordance with strict laws against anti-competitive behavior.

Does Your Invention Need a Patent?

Does Your Invention Need a Patent?

If you've invented something amazing, and you want to get rich from your idea, you must patent your invention as soon as possible. Patents are issued by the Patent and Trademark Office in the United States, and other patent offices in other countries. They are documents that grant the patent owner the right to prevent others from making, using or selling an invention for a specific period of time. Usually, the time frame is between 17 to 20 years.

One of the main determinants of getting a patent is whether or not your invention is unique enough to be worthy of one. Patents are usually only granted for inventions that are different from all other inventions in the past in some significant manner.

Is a Common EU Patent System Possible?

Is a Common EU Patent System Possible?
© jepoirrier
¬Businesses in Europe and those that operate in Europe have long argued that the European Union should have a common EU patent system. In their view, such a system would encourage innovation and efficiency, particularly for smaller firms, as the current system of separate patent filings for different European jurisdictions is often impractical and expensive.

Although a common EU patent system may seem beneficial for some, it seems that such a uniform scheme has begun to encounter some legal challenges especially from the European Court of Justice. According to a leaked document, the Advocate General of the Court asserted that a centralized patent would be incongruent with the European Union's treaties.

This could have a negative effect for IT companies, as the sector is responsible for filing the highest number of patents at the European Patent Office.
